Record: 3-4. Five-inning record: 3-4Zac Gallen was solid, but Riley Smith was knocked about for the second appearance https://www.adfanstore.com/Luis_Gonzalez_Jersey-42, and Jeremy Beasley also had a poor day among Arizona pitchers. The Rangers built out a five-run lead, but the Diamondbacks pulled to within one run, courtesy of a four-run eighth. And you wonder what might have been, had their seventh inning not been stopped by the mercy rule, with runners on the corners and one out. Oh, well... Gallen day sounds to have gone about as well as could be expected, getting through his hoped-for three innings on 46 pitches, 31 of them for strikes. He only allowed one hit, a one-out single in the first inning, walked one and struck out three. Interestingly, all of the K came with the hitters going down swinging on off-speed offerings from Zac, two knuckle curves and a change-up. Smith endured another rough outing. It only two games, but he hasn looked like the guy who had a 1.47 ERA for Arizona. Instead, in four innings, he has allowed eight hits and five ER, though has a nice K:BB ratio of 4:0. Today, the hits included one off the bat at 113.4 mph as well as a solo homer. Joe Mantiply and Taylor Guilbeau worked scoreless innings, before Beasley took over. The first five batters reached against him, and three scored, with another coming home on a double-play ball that led to the mercy rule being invoked. Tyler Gilbert worked the ninth, getting a 1-2-3 frame with a pair of K. Seemed the umpires wanted to go home Matt Williams Jersey, the last five hitters for the game all striking out, with some... interesting calls. On offense, Arizona was held scoreless through five innings, and didn seem to have much cooking. They finally got on the board with some two-out magic in the sixth: Ketel Marte doubled and Eduardo Escobar drove him in with a single. That a sentence I hope to see a lot of in 2021... The seventh saw Arizona load the bases with no outs, but after Jose Herrera made the score 3-2 with a sacrifice fly Mark Grace Jersey, a potentially big inning for the D-backs was ended, as mentioned above. They did get it the next time up, with Juniel Querecuto driving in a pair with a double, and two more runs scored before, once again, the frame was mercy ruled. Arizona ended the day with nine hits, two of them by Marte. Tomorrow sees the Chicago Cubs visit Salt River Field, with Merrill Kelly the scheduled starter. It another radio game, so we probably have some kind of GDT. Maybe more than Jack and I will be in it :)
